A lot is in place to commence the 3rd edition of the prestigious annual Kannywood Awards, which made a tremendous debut 2013 in Kano. Although the idea was initially conceived in order to reward the active members of the vernacular motion picture industry, other wisely known as Kannywood, but the first edition went vinegary as many of the practitioners felt some awards were influenced by the ogranisers. To this, a lot of professionals from within the industry see it as one of the challenges of staging an award-like competition.
It was recorded that the maiden edition of Kannywood Awards, which was sponsored by MTN Nigeria was held in the heart of Kany City; and witnessed by crème de la crème of the Hausa movie practitioners and stakeholders.
In the said event, the ace actor, Ali Nuhu, who returned from South Africa hours before the event, bagged the Best Actor Award; while Nafisa Abdullahi received the Best Actress Award.
Also crowned were Sani Danja and Adam Zango, who won the Best Entertaining Kannywood Actor and Best Music Composer respectively. Others were, Naziru Ahmed, who bagged the Best Singer award while his elder brother, the ace director, Aminu Saira, bagged the best director award.
A standing ovasion was giving to a movie, ‘Wani Gari,’ as the best movie of the year for its knacks in showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Hausa community.
The maiden edition being the first of its kind in the history of Kannywood, also celebrated one pioneer stars in the history of Kannywood, Malam Kasimu Yero, who also featured in the olden TV-Soap, ‘Cockcrow At Dawn,’ as ‘Uncle Gaga.’ Yero was accorded with a Lifetime Achievement award. Also crowned where Usman Baba Pategi (Samanja) and Audu Kano.
The event also recognised with the outstanding support by the then governor of Kaduna State, Muhktar Ramalan Yero by the late Emir of Kano, Ado Beyero, who was represented by one of his sons, then Hakimin Dala, Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar-gida now Wamban Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
The event, though was successful, but left a lot of vaporous talks. Some expressed their dismay to what they felt was a fruitless event. But a lot of the stakeholders within the industry were forced to go back to their drawing table in order to remain relevant in subsequent series of the event. While the organisers on the other hand took up the challenges for further implementation.
History repeated itself at the second edition of the prestigious event, when it was shifted from Kano city to the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. It was held at the NAF Confrence centre hotel, along Kado-Gwarinpa road express way.
Again, the multiple award winning actor, Ali Nihu made another conquest when he won the popular category as the Best Actor, beating his close rival Adam A. Zango, who is one of the MTN ambassadors. Same also goes to Nafisa Abdullahi, who remained as the Best Actress, Yasin Auwal (Best Director) and the Late Rabilu Musa Danlasa (Ibro) emerged as the Best Comedian, all at the popular category. On the jurist corner, Sadi Sani Sadik with a movie ‘Dinyar Makaho’ and Hadiza Aliyu Gabon ‘Daga Ni Sai Ke’ bagged the title of Best Actor and Actress respectively.
By and large, there were some improvements on the side of the organisers, observers opined moving the event from Kano to Abuja was one of the huge success the Sarari Merchandise Ltd recorded.
The third edition, which is scheduled to take place on the 30th of January, 2016 is another milestone by the Kannywood Awards organisers, according to them, this year’s episode of the awards has enjoyed qualitative and professional touches from the local organising committee.
The CEO of the event, Dr. Ahmad Sarari said the 2016 awards is going to be exceptional for its international standard. “I am assuring you that this year’s event is going to be more organised than the previous editions. We have in our list, some dignitaries coming from all over Nigeria in order to give a national look.
“We feel we our theme this year, ‘Patriotism through entertainment,’ will go a long way in imparting patriotism through our medium so as to complement efforts of the federal government in fostering unity, peace and progress,” he said.
According to him the event was created to primarily acknowledge talents in the motion picture world. Adding that the event will equally celebrate the Hausa movie industry’s giant strides clicking 25 years in existence.
“We staged the Kannywood awards series in order to reward and complement hardwork in the industry as well as boosting the emerging talents in the Hausa movie industry. I can assure you this is the biggest event in Kannywood. This edition, being the 3rd will show case a lot of side attraction aside the award proper. The budding industry has clicked 25, and we are going to use the medium to mark it in our own way.” He said.
Although 48 movies were so far entered for all the categories, the juries are already doing the needful in order to make yet another history.
The observers feel that this year’s ceremony is going to be very steep between the actors.
