Niger Govt Pleads With People In Flood-Prone Areas To Relocate

The Niger State government on Tuesday urged its people staying in riverine areas to move upland to avoid being affected, this is as a result of the prediction by the Meteorological Agency listing the state as part of 26 states likely to be affected by flooding this year. The government made this warning in a statement signed and released by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa, saying the warning becomes necessary as a result of incessant rainfalls in the state and also that the state could not watch its people lose their lives and property as a result of the flash flood.

“The Niger State government is concerned especially now that the Nigeria Metrological Agency has warned of impending flood disasters in some states which Niger State isalso listed. We are calling on the people to becareful and not to allow the flood to come before taking any measure, the statement reads.“We understand the attachment that some of the riverine communities have to their ancestral homes because of their vocations mostly fishing and farming but we are advising them to at least move away until theriver banks which are free from overflow.”
