The Speaker stated this on Monday while commissioning a mini-health centre he personally donated to the Wassa IDPs Camp in Abuja Municipal Area Council of the FCT in collaboration with an Abuja-based private firm, Vantage Habitat.
Dogara said the need for the provision of the facility arose when he visited the camp on the 7th of January to distribute food and non-food items but was greeted with the cry for a health care facility which the people at the camp lacked.
“I remember in the course of the ceremony, there was one rallying cry that there was no health facility, and we promised that we were going to do something about it.
“On getting to town, we started talking to corporate bodies and donors who said we had to wait until the budget was passed. And since I wasn’t satisfied with the responses I was getting, I had to mention it to close friends that this is one of the immediate needs of the IDPs and fortunately, Capt. Hosa took it upon himself to partner with us and do this (referring to the Chairman of Vantage Habitat).
“So I want to commend him for this gesture. That’s why I’m happy that through their efforts, we have been able to put this in place. Some may express disappointment that this is small, thinking that it would be a gigantic structure”, he said.
Dogara added that cproviding the facility was not the end of the effort, as arrangement have been made with relevant authorities to supply the facility with essential and emergency drugs as well as personnel.
“We are not just putting this facility here, we have discoursed with relevant authorities who have agreed to post medical personnel here. NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) has promised to post doctors here with AMAC also pledging to bring in nurses that would work here on daily basis.
“We want to bring the presence of government closer to the people here so that during the time of their stay here, they would not have cause to dispare over what we think we can control”, Dogara added.
He announced that he still has other outstanding visits to IDPs camps such as Jos, Maiduguri, Yola and Gombe.
The man whose company partnered with the Speaker to facilitate the health centre, Capt. Hosa Okumbo thank God for the event whilst giving credit to the Speaker for the initiative to help the IDPs.
“I’m glad that today this is happening, but I want to give the full credit to the Speaker who’s very compassionate to the less privileged in our society. He was so compassionate to alleviate the sufferings of our people that are here, that we at Vantage Habitat thought it wise to give this token as our own contribution in partnership with the Speaker.
“Projects like these are not about profit, but about reaching out to those in need, because these are our brothers and sisters, and I’m also calling on other Nigerians to reach out and contribute their own quota in their own little way”, he said.
Representative of General TY Danjuma (rtd), chairman of Victim Support Fund and Initiative on the North-East, Mallam Tijani Tosa, said: “I speak on behalf of Gen. TY Danjuma and to convey his admiration for the Hon, Speaker for the show of compassion and brotherliness.
“We at the Victim Support Fund will try as much as possible to reinforce efforts such as that of the Speaker to ensure that the sufferings of the displaced are brought to the barest minimum”, he added.
Others at the commissioning ceremony were chairmen, House Committees on IDPs, Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, representatives of the joint security chiefs, NEMA as well as paramilitary agencies
