Buhari rallies global support for terrorism fight

• Meets leaders of 48 nations, gets Germany’s backing

• ECOWAS talks tough on maltreatment of citizens

Nigeria’s bid to combat terrorism could receive a boost if moves by President Muhammadu Buhari to woo the international community yields results.

Despite gains by the country in pushing back Boko Haram, the group has continued to inflict havoc on soft targets, like the recent suicide bombing of a mosque in Mubi, Adamawa State, which killed over 50 persons.

Buhari, on the margins of the 5th AU-EU Summit in Abidjan, discussed the nation’s anti-terror campaign with his German counterpart, Angela Merkel, who assured him that her country would increase its support in tackling the issue.

Former President Jonathan Replies Gov. Shettima on Chibok Girls

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday dismissed claims credited to Borno State Governor, Kashim Shetima, as parochial and jaundiced.

Shettima on Thursday accused the ex-President of bad governance and poor choices.

But Jonathan in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, strongly debunked the allegations of poor governance and highlighted his key achievements and described them as matched.

Jonathan Tried To Remove Me, Accused Me Of Kidnapping Chibok Girls-Shettima

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State yesterday said that former President Goodluck Jonathan wanted to remove him as governor.

Shettima spoke in Abuja at the public presentation and launch of ‘On A Platter Of Gold: How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria’, a book written by Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). 

It would be recalled that Governor Shettima had once told former President Jonathan that “it is absolutely impossible to defeat Boko Haram”.

What President Buhari must do to stop slavery in Libya - Speaker Dogara

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, meanwhile has become the latest voice urging President Muhammadu Buhari to do more in tackling slavery on the African continent. “Mr. President should, if necessary, deploy Nigeria’s diplomatic andmilitary clout on this matter. We would like to see an immediate convening of emergency session of the ECOWAS and AU to lunch a rescue operation as soon as possible,” Dogara said yesterday. 

He regretted that “the voices of ECOWAS and the AU are unacceptably too feeble on this devastating issue”, and commended French president, Emmanuel Macron, for taking “a principled position and applying pressure on the UN to take urgent steps in dealing with this scourge.”He said: “We expect other nations who value freedom and the dignity of the human person to join France in working out a permanent solution to this resurgent evil.”

Maulud: Imbibe tenets of peace, Tambuwal urges Nigerians

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, has urged all Nigerians to uphold the tenets of peaceful coexistence and respect for all faith so as to build a united and peaceful nation.

Tambuwal made the call in a message to commemorate this year’s Maulud celebration issued in Sokoto on Friday by his spokesman, Malam Imam Imam.

He said the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) should renew “our faith and bond of unity as one people, one nation, our diversities notwithstanding.”

Over 1,200 Nigerians returned from Libya in November – NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency ( NEMA ) says a total of 1,295 Nigerians voluntarily returned from Libya in November after being stranded in the volatile North African country enroute Europe.

The Nigerians returned in various batches between Nov. 6 and Nov. 30 with the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration ( IOM ) and the European Union ( EU ).

 Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has announced his resolve to adopt the three children, of the late Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Professor Jonathan Andrew Nok.

This was also as he said the state government will sponsor education of the three children of the late Commissioner up to Phd level.

Governor El-Rufai made the disclosure at Kaduna Government House on Friday during the valedictory executive session held in honour of the late Professor Nok.
