Buhari to visit Sambisa Forest to open the Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship 2017

​President Muhammadu Buhari will on Monday visit the Sambisa Forest to declare open the Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship 2017. The forest was the stronghold and strategic headquarters of the Boko Haram sect until they were pushed out by the military in December 2016.

During the visit, President Buhari will be accompanied by the Minister of Defense, Alhaji Mansur Ali; Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olanisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Sadique, and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Obet Ebas. 

Chief of Training and Operations, Army, Major General David Amadu, during a press briefing on Friday in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, said a number of activities had been lined up to mark the championship including medical outreach to Bama, Konduga, and Magumeri IDPs’ camps, educational training for Army Education Corps in Maiduguri, security awareness meetings with the traditional rulers and distribution of relief materials to IDPs within the capital and surrounding towns.

He explained that the championshipwas aimed at testing and shaping the intelligence and professional capacity of the Nigerian Army officers and soldiers. He said it was also to put the Sambisa Forest into proper use and turn it into Nigerian Army training ground as roads and bridges had been constructed and opened to enable them to test arms, ammunition and equipment. 

He, however, appealed to members of the public to cooperate with the Nigerian Army during the championship, pointing out that adequate arrangements had been made to ensure the protection of lives and property within and around the defined range of the demonstration.

Any of the 27 local government chairmen that dares to bring shame to the Borno State Government through any act suspected of support or links with Boko Haram will be entirely on his own, Governor Kashim Shettima has warned. The chairmen were appointed after the six-months tenure of those in office, elapsed last month.

Speaking at the swearing-in of 27 new caretaker chairmen at the Government House in Maiduguri on Thursday, Shettima also said any of the chairmen who doesn't desire to relocate from Maiduguri to his local government area was free to reject his appointment so he could be replaced.
The Governor’s warning on issues of insurgency was based on instances recorded few months ago in which a caretaker chairman and Vice Chairmen of two local government areas were arrested by the military over allegations connected with the Boko Haram insurgents.

Governor Umar Ganduje flagged off 2nd phase of the construction of 789 hand pump boreholes across 44 LGs in Kano

His Excellency Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR the Executive Governor of Kano State yesterday, 24th March 2017 flagged off the 2nd phase of the construction of 789 handpump boreholes across the 44 LGs of the state.
This is in addition to over 400 boreholes constructed last year around the state in order to ease the problem of water shortage in rural areas of Kano. This is all part of the Kano State Rural Integrated Programme of his Excellency, tagged Karkara Salamu Alaikum which intends to rapidly develop our rural areas.

Within the last year, solar powered boreholes were also constructed by the administration of Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR and additional boreholes were repaired in the state.

Gov Ahmed seeks stakeholders’ support to revamp education sector

​Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara has called on community development associations, old students’ associations and other stakeholders in the education sector to meaningfully support the government in revamping the education sector in the state. Ahmed made the call on Monday atthe Government House,Ilorin when he received members of Government Secondary School Omu-Aran Old Boys Association (OGSSOBA), led by its President, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi.

The governor said that the call became necessary because intervention in education sector required input and strong support of all the stakeholders for the state government to succeed in the task. He said the state government would continue to provide facilitiesto make learning environment more conducive in colleges in the state. Ahmed said the schools on priority list included Government Secondary School, Ilorin; Queen Elizabeth School, Ilorin; Government Secondary School, Omu-Aran and Offa Grammar School, Offa which, he described, as largest student-enrolment schools in the state.

The governor urged old student associations to make concerted efforts to give back to their Alma mata infrastructural facilities and teaching equipment to complement government’s efforts to improve falling standard of education in the nation.He said the state government had earmarked funds, under its Infrastructure Development Fund (IDF), to meet the needs of all colleges in the state. Ahmed assured that with improvement in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), more critical development-oriented projects would be executed by his government.Speaking earlier, Adeniyi said that the association had embarked on aN200 million classrooms, libraries and laboratory rehabilitation projects toward the celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary in July, 2017.He also said the association had over the years awarded scholarships to students for exhibiting exemplary performance in their educational pursuits and donated a bus to the school.The president was accompanied on the occasion by a former acting Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Otunba Jide Adebayo; retired Maj.- Gen. Yemi Abidoye, former Commander, Ordinance Corps of the Nigerian Army and Prince Ayo Fagbemi, a retired permanent secretary in the state.Others were Messrs Nasiru Ibrahim and Jubril Haruna, both serving permanent secretaries in the state, Mr. Remi Afolayan, the association’s secretary-general and Barr. Atolagbe, Special Adviser to the state governor on legal matters.

Fulani Herdsmen not behind killings in Benue – Police Commissioner

The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, has exonerated Fulani herdsmen from the ongoing killings in Benue State, the nation’s acclaimed food basket.
The police boss warned that no one should rope the herders into the lingering crisis rocking Benue for years now.

DAILY POST reports that the state witnessed another heavy bloodbath in Zaki Biam last week after gunmen stormed the community and hacked over 52 persons to death.
Although, no one has claimed responsibility for the gruesome attack, residents believe that the bloody incident was perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen.
Reacting to the claim while speaking on a live programme on AIT, Makama identified ‘criminals’ to be behind the attacks.
He said, “I repeat, the current massacre in Benue State has nothing to do with the Fulani herdsmen. The actors are criminals who are determined to cause terror to the unsuspecting innocent residents of the State.”

Few days ago, Makama had warned Ortom to stop chasing away Fulani herdsmen from Benue State, affirming that the country belongs to everybody, including herders.

President Buhari sticks with Magu as EFCC chairman

There were indications yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari will insist on Mr. Ibrahim Magu becoming the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after the Senate has twice turned down his confirmation.
The President appears set to overrule the Department of State Services (DSS) whose report had said that Magu was not fit for the seat.
The President, it was learnt, will soon make his position on the embattled acting EFCC boss known.
A Presidency source who spoke with our correspondent in confidence yesterday said the President has a soft spot for Magu.
