Kaduna State University ICT gutted by fire

A section of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) center of the Kaduna State University (KASU), Kaduna has erupted in flames, while some students were making use of the facility.

The fire, which started about 11:45 am lasted for about one hour forty-five minutes, destroying computers, server, props and other internet equipment worth millions of Naira. However, no casualty was recorded from the incident.

Although the cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained, some sources said the fire could have been as a result of electrical fault, while others believed it could be a sabotage because the center recently took delivery of new equipment and that it could be a cover up for a shoddy deal or theft.

Our correspondent, who visited the scene, observed that smoke was still bellowing from the building as men of the Kaduna State Fire Service tried to prevent the fire from engulfing the other sections of the ICT center. Fire fighters from the military, NNPC, also came to render assistance.

The Kaduna State Fire Service Director, Paul Fidelis Aboi, who was at the scene overseeing the operation disclosed that as soon as they received a distress call, they responded immediately and brought the fire under control.

He noted that the efforts of the fire fighters were able to prevent the fire from engulfing other sections of the ICT center and other buildings in the school as well.

The director said many fire fighters from other sister agencies like NTI, NBTE, NNPC and Nigerian Army also came to render assistance, but before their arrival they (Kaduna State fire service) had already taken care of the situation.

He said although some equipment were lost, no live was lost and no injury was recorded, assuring that as soon as the cause of the fire is ascertained, measures would be taken to forestall future occurrence.
