THE new Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj-Gen. Hassan Umaru, has urged the support of all Nigerians in the fight against Boko Haram terrorists in the North East region of the country, saying that the military should not be left alone in the task to end insurgency and ensure peace and unity in the country.
Umaru spoke yesterday during his maiden news conference on the ongoing military operations in the North East at Operation Lafiya Dole Media Centre in Maiduguri.
“This nation is a single territorial entity, and belongs to all of us, hence there is the urgent need for all Nigerians, particularly the media to fully support us in this ongoing war against terrorism and insurgency, which had claimed many lives and property,” said the Theatre Commander.
He continued: “The Nigerian Army should be highly appreciated by all Nigerians, as they have liberated almost all the local councils captured and occupied by Boko Haram terrorists in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, despite some operational hitches.
“The Treasury Single Account (TSA) and the Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) have also greatly affected institutions, organisations and even the military, as operational funds, salaries and allowances are not released on time. But I appeal to the soldiers to be patient and not be deceived by misguided elements.”
He also called on the media to further enlighten Nigerians on the need for “support and cooperation” with the military, so that they will defeat terrorism and insurgency in the affected region and the nation at large.
The General Officer Commanding, (GOC) 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Brig-Gen Victor Ezugwu, asked journalists to place national interest first in their duty.
