Panel gives Shi’ites one week to submit memo

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the clashes between the Nigerian Army and the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has ordered the IMN to submit a memo stating its position on the incident before March 21, 2016.
It is the first time the panel is taking a definite position on the movement since it commenced public hearing more than four weeks ago. It had in previous sittings given the movement time to hear from its leader before deciding on whether to continue appearing before it or not.

In yesterday’s sitting, after the counsel to the IMN, Maxwell Kyon, narrated his frustration in the bid to have access to the sect leader, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, he requested for more time to enable him meet the leader.
The commission after considering the application took a break that lasted close to two hours and after resuming, ruled that it was granting the movement an extension of time to meet its leader. It noted  however that four of the six weeks the commission had to sit had been expended on waiting for the sect to meet its leader.
Chairman of the commission, Justice Muhammed Lawal Garba, ruled that while the commission would adjourn to March 21 to allow the IMN meet its leader, the movement should submit a memo to the commission before that date since it had been sending legal representation.
He said the commission would proceed with the public hearing irrespective of what transpires by hearing the memo from the Nigerian Army on March 23.
 Professor Auwalu Yadudu who briefed the press on the position of the commission said having noted the request by the counsel to the IMN, the commission considered it necessary for its work to continue.
