Kano car racing: Police arraigned 52 youths



The Kano State Police Command said it had arraigned 52 youngsters for allegedly engaging in ‘car racing’ on New Year’s day.
The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, DSP Magaji Majiya said this in Kano on Friday. According to Majiya, the suspects were apprehended on Jan. 1, along Zoo Road for ignoring the police warning against car racing in the state.
“Despite the earlier warning against car racing aimed at protecting lives and properties of the citizens, some youth defied the warning and engaged themselves in the act.
“On 01/01/2017 at about 5pm some youths converged on Zoo Road with the intention to engage in the illegal act.

However, on sighting the policemen deployed to the area, they started pelting them with stones,”the statement said.
The statement said 52 suspects were arrested and two cars confiscated while all the suspects were charged to court where they pleaded guilty.
“They were tried and summarily convicted to six months imprisonment or a fine of N10, 000.00 each by the presiding judge.
The statement reiterated the commitment of the command to arrest anyone who violates the law in the state for prosecution.
Last year,  17 youths were also arrested for illegal car racing stunts that turned tragic. Two persons died.
According to the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Magaji Musa Majiya, a Chief Superintendent, the suspects were arrested when they blocked the busy Hadejia Road in the metropolis.
The police then confiscated four luxury cars that include a Toyota Prado jeep, Peugeot 306, a Toyota and a Honda used during the stunts.
