Even with the victory of their team, Kano Pillars fans threw pebbles, water sachets, and slippers at Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Governor Ganduje was in attendance at Sani Abacha Stadium to watch the team's match against Wikki Tourists from Bauchi State.
The match ended 2-1 in favor of Kano Pillars. Shortly after the final whistle, Kano Pillars fans started chanting “Ba mayi,” meaning “we don’t want you,” to the State Governor and his entourage, and from there, his vehicles were pelted with objects.
The visibly angry Governor was eased out of the stadium by the combined team of heavy security personnel and his aides, while the road leading out was cleared by a detachment of the Nigerian Mobile Police drafted to bring sanity in and around the stadium.
When contacted, the Chairman of the Supporters Club, Bashir Jide, declined our correspondent’s persistent phone calls, but a source close to him informed me that the mob action on the Governor was the accumulated frustration of the supporters who accuse both the management of Kano Pillars and the State Governor for not releasing funds on time to recruit quality players for the team.
The fans were also not happy over the appointment of Kabiru Baita as Pillars Chairman, who they are accusing of sowing seeds of discord among top players on the team.
There was no response from the State Commissioner for Information, whose office is the supervisory Ministry of Sports in Kano State.
