Breastfeedingweek: Kebbi State Government Commissions Aisha Buhari Breastfeeding Rooms For Working Mothers


As part of activities marking the World breastfeeding Week in Kebbi State. The wife of the president, Haj Aisha Mohammadu Buhari has commissioned breastfeeding rooms for working mothers in the State Secretariat Birnin Kebbi.
Mrs Buhari who was represented by SSA Dr Hajjo Sani in Birnin Kebbi on Monday. Dr Sani led a team of 6 from Future Assured arrived in the state capital Birnin Kebbi yesterday. In her message, Haj Aisha Buhari commended Dr Zainab for the initiative and urged other states to follow the trend promising to support. She also called on the state government to consider the extension of maternity leave from 4mths to 6mths for working mothers.

Dr Zainab Bagudu wife of Kebbi state Governor who championed the rooms in her address thanked the First Lady for performing coming to Kebbi to perform the honour and urged her to continue being the face of hope for Nigerian women and children.
Global statistics indicate that over 100,000 children die annually as a result of inadequate breastfeeding by mothers, not to mention the huge associated economic loss of about 21 Billion dollars annually. New data suggests Nigeria has a breastfeeding rate of 25% up from 17% in the last 5 years.
The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State Col Samaila Yombe said Kebbi was a female friendly state as evidenced by many programs and laws benefitting the women folk.
Kebbi state Head of Service Alh Abubakar Udu a driving force behind the program directed all MDAs to provide such spaces but cautioned female workers not to abuse such rooms.
Present were Kebbi state Commissioner of Health and Information, Permanent Secretaries, and representatives from UNICEF, Nigerian Society of Neonatal Medicine, Nigerian Association of Paediatric Nurses, Civil Society for stepping up Nutrition etc.
