Scarcity of bread as Kano bakers on strike over flour price

There is scarcity of bread in Kano and environs as a result of a three-day warning strike by bakers over increase in the price of flour and other baking items.
Spokesman of the bakers’ union in the state, Mallam Naziru Hassan, said though the strike was against the wishes of many bakers, it became a last resort to address problems affecting their business.
He said: “A bag of flour that was bought at N6,000 is now N8,000, a bag of sugar is now N8,000 as against N6,000 and a carton of yeast is now N10,000 as against it former price of N6,000.”

Hassan added that prices of butter and vegetable oil had also increased from N4,000 and N5,300 to N5,500 and N7,600 respectively.
He lamented that apart from the increase in prices, the state government would also increase its tax charges on bakers, noting that in view of these, the union was planning to increase the price of bread.
“We have no alternative than do so because we cannot continue operating in this difficult situation”, he said.
He added that leaders of the union would hold a meeting yesterday to decide the next action after the three-day warning strike ends today.
