A
coalition of 23 civil society and non-governmental organizations under
the aegis of the Global Centre for Conscious living Against Corruption
has voiced readiness to defend the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen
Yusuf Tukur Buratai, at the Kaduna State Judicial Commission of Inquiry.
The organization,
which stated that it conducted an independent investigation into the
December 12, 2015 clashes in Zaria between the Islamic Movement in
Nigeria and the Nigerian Army, stressed that its findings showed that
the right of COAS was grossly violated while his convoy was blocked.
The report, jointly
signed by Dr. Nwambu Gabriel and Comrade Ali Abacha for the coalition,
stated that General Buratai explored ‘all polite, proactive and civil
diplomacy’ to encourage the Shi’ites to ‘dismantle their barricades and
burn-fire, including speaking to the leader of the group’.
It stated that the
troop saddled with the responsibility of the security of the COAS and
his convoy were compelled to defend their principal and open the
barricaded road for the convoy and other law abiding Nigerian citizens.
The report also
stated that it was imperative that all Nigerian citizens obeyed the laws
and respected the rights of other Nigerians, adding the Nigerian Army
is the major instrument that makes Nigeria a sovereign nation.
“It is imperative, therefore, to treat issues pertaining the Army with utmost care,” it added.
