Girls Child Free Education: Kano state government awards scholarship to over 41,000 girls from 12 LG


A total of 41,691 primary school girls in Kano state have benefited from the state government scholarship programme this year, the state Commissioner for Education, Professor Hafiz Abubakar has said.

Speaking at the presentation of the scholarship award, Professor Abubakar, who is also the state deputy governor, said the pupils were selected from 12 local government areas of the state.

He said, “Each girl is to get N45,000 per session to facilitate her education pursuit. The gesture was aimed at encouraging enrollment of girls and their retention in schools.”


Abubakar explained that last year a total of 6,993 girls from six local government areas of the state benefitted from the scheme.

He added that a total 2,773 schools across 12 local government areas of the state had witnessed minor repairs and got instructional materials under the programme this year.

He pointed out that some female primary schools’ teachers had been sponsored to further their studies under the programme.

Professor Abubakar said Kano state government got a grant of 27 million dollar for three programmes under education that include schools improvement for primary and pre-primary schools, girls’ scholarship and female teachers scholarship.

He said a total of 100 million dollars grant was awarded to Nigeria by the Global Partnership Grant on Education of which Kano state got 27 million dollars.

Other benefiting states, he added include Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina and Sokoto.
