Court Restrains Police IG, Others From Interfering With Conduct Of PDP National Convention

A Federal High Court has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Director Department of State Security from INTERFERING in any manner howsoever with the PDP's conduct of its National Convention. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was also forbidden from refusing to monitor the Convention. The order also mandated the Police and DSS to provide security for the Convention and clearly forbade them from refusing to do so. This order brings the number of court orders against the imposing leadership of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff to four and raises fundamental questions about the complicity of the Nigerian Police that appears bent on truncating the rule of law and Nigeria's democracy by not abiding by the different court orders. The new Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris is called upon to both respect and promote the ethos of democracy by abiding by valid court orders imposing clear restrictions on his actions and mandating defined actions by his office in order to forestall the complete breakdown of law and order in Nigeria.
