Flood claims 3 lives in Gombe, Benue

Flood resulting from heavy downpour has claimed the lives of two persons and damaged 150 houses in Kumo town of Akko local government area of Gombe state.In a similar development in Benue State, at least one person died yesterday as a result of flooding at Udei in Guma local government area.The rain in Kumo which started around 2pm Tuesday and lasted for hours, affected eight residential areas where it destroyed properties and foodstuffs, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said.SEMA’s acting Head of Rescue and Rehabilitation, Malam Mohammed Garba, said a preliminary report showed that the flooding resulted from inadequate and poor drainage in the town.Malama Garba confirmed that two persons lost their lives in addition to households items, foodstuffs and over 150 houses that were badly affected by the flood.He said the deceased persons, Abubakar Yakubu and Bakari Ali Badaru, were consumed by the flood while rushing to their houses.The flood in Benue State did its havoc amidst repeated appeal by the state government to the people in flood-prone areas to immediately vacate their abode to avoid any impending danger following Metrological Agency’s prediction. The Executive Secretary of Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Boniface Ortese confirmed to Daily Trust yesterday in Makurdi that one person died as a result of flood in Udei early hours of the day.Ortese who was on his way to the location to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the flood, further appealed to Benue residents living or farming along the coastline to move to higher grounds without delay, warning that the impending flood might be worse than the 2012 flood experienced in the country.
