Yobe state government,
in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and
development partners, has flagged off meningitis vaccination exercise across
the 17 local government councils and targets 771,778 children.
Flagging the phase one
of the vaccination at the Emir of Damaturu’s Palace, the Commissioner for
Health, Dr. Mohammed Bello Kawuwa, said: “Yobe recorded 432 cases and 44 deaths
within late 2016 and in 2017.
“Among the six northern
states which were most affected by meningitis in 2017, Yobe is the only state
to secure this golden opportunity to implement the MenAfric vaccination
campaign across all its local government. Some states are implementing outbreak
response only in the most affected areas.”
In his goodwill
message, Geoffrey Ijuma UNICEF (CFO Borno), represented by Stephane, pledged
the continuous support of development partners for the high quality
implementation and in the effective operationalisation of vaccination teams to
hard-to-reach local government, wards and settlements.
Earlier, in his welcome
address, the chairman, Damaturu local government council, Alhaji Bulama Modu,
called on parents to use the opportunity provided by participating fully in the
exercise.
“I call on our
traditional leaders and parents to continue mobilising members of their
communities on the importance of this vaccination for its success,” he said.
The exercise, which is
in two phases, had begun on February 7 – 11, 2018, while the second phase is to
hold between 14 and 18 of the same month.
According to him, the
vaccine is to be given at the government approved health centres across the
state only.
