The militants called out the people of Yakshari into a mosque around 10am on Saturday and opened fire on them, killing 22 a day after they ambushed some villagers who were returning to their community, killing eight of them.
A trader from Yakshari, Adamu Yalam, said militants on motorcycles had stormed the village and asked residents to assemble in the mosque for a sermon.
“The soldiers in Damboa do not patrol around our villages. Our villages are only protected by our vigilantes who are armed with sticks and cutlasses. The militants overpowered them on the outskirts of the village. I do not know what happened to those ones,” he said.
Yahi Lam, one of those who escaped from Kachifa, four kilometers from Damboa, said the militants had earlier attacked the village and forced residents out.
“On Friday around 10.30pm, some of the villagers regrouped and decided to return to the village and take away some of their belongings not knowing that the militants were waiting in the bush. Suddenly, they opened fire on the villagers, killing eight while five escaped to tell us what happened. We cannot go back home now”.
