Sokoto State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Jabi Kilgori, has said that plans are under way to initiate a mobile school programme for school age children as a way of enhancing access to education.
Kilgori, who lamented that the gender parity between girls and boys in school enrollment across the state was very disturbing, added that it was more noticeable in secondary schools.
Speaking at a media briefing organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Sokoto State Council in conjunction with the state Ministry of Information, the commissioner maintained that lots of reasons were responsible for the gender parity in school enrolment.
According to him, there are approximately 70 percent males and 30 per cent females enrolled in schools across the state.
“Lots of reasons, including challenges of security, social cultural barriers, among others, are responsible for the poor enrollment of female compared to their male counterparts in the state”.
Giving insist into the primary purpose of the ministry, the commission for education, he said, “There are 82 senior secondary schools, 166 JSS and 1,980 primary schools, 2,244 non-formal learning centres, 343 Integrated Quoranic education centres and nine Almajiri schools under the ministry.”
