The Gombe State Board of Internal Revenue said it is targeting to internally generate N1 billion monthly revenue before end of the year.
Executive Chairman of the board, Alhaji Muhammad Adamu Damji, stated this at the launched of the Voluntary Income and Assets Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) in the state.
He said the projected N1 billion monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) is achievable, following a robust awareness campaign and the public becoming more enlightened by the day.
Adamu Damji added that the state revenue generation has grown from between N70 million and N150 million monthly to N200 million and N500 million monthly, since the inauguration of a new tax policy in February 2017.
According to him the increase was achieved through the Internal Revenue Central System tax reforms, which he said has blocked leakages and increased revenue generation in the state.
During the launch of the VAIDS, the board in collaboration with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), went round markets, motor parks and business premises within the Gombe Metropolis, to enlighten the people on the advantages and opportunities that were available in the scheme.
“The VAIDS encourages taxpayers to pay and voluntary come to declare their assets and income and pay the necessary taxes. The window provide opportunity for people that avoided tax payment to regularise their status, and then pay the necessary taxes that are due to the three tiers of government.
“Anybody who takes advantage of this window will not be prosecuted for tax evasion or avoidance. And will be given the opportunity to pay whatever taxes that are due to government in instalment,” Alhaji Damji said.
He added that the awareness campaigns would be step down to the 11 local government areas of the state.
Our correspondent report that the VAIDS is expected to last from July 1, 2017 to March 30, 2018 within which defaulters over a period of six years can regularise their tax status without penalty.
