Makurdi Modern Market has before now remained a melting business
hub in the Benue State capital, built by the Aper Aku administration in early
80s, it is designed to provide ready world class luck up shops for traders
dealing on the provision, building materials and sale of various classes of
goods and services.
High shops rates, poor
infrastructure and taxation, has forced most shop owners to abandon the market
turning it into a graveyard as few traders and customers are left in the near
empty shops in contrast to the ever busy commercial activities.
I took a walk round the market
yesterday after visiting court 3 within the premises of the market and what I
saw was an eyesore. Rodents have taken over the market some of the shop that
were gutted by fire have been turned to dump sites. A trader I spoke with Mr
Sunday Emeka, said that just last week a customer was attacked by a snake,
reached to the sickbay but no first aid treatment available.
Mr Emeka said that, the total
neglect of the market has obviously been a source of concern why the government
choose to be insensitive to the plight of the traders. High taxation and poor
infrastructure has made most traders leave the market for shopping malls within
the town which are cheaper than the market shops.
I call on the commissioner for
commerce trade and investment to visit the market with a view of assessing the
facility and finding ways of revamping it, or else the Makurdi Modern Market of
Aper Aku's dream is on the verge of extinction.
