2 die, 17 injured in auto crash at Gada-Biyu

An accident scene near University of Abuja staff quarters, along Giri-Abuja-Lokoja road last Thursday night.
Two persons were trapped to death in a head-on collision involving two vehicles in the wee hours of yesterday at Gada-Biyu village on the Abuja-Lokoja expressway.
Our reporter learnt that 17 passengers, who sustained various degrees of injury, were rescued by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and taken to a nearby hospital in Abaji town.
A witness said the accident happened about 1:34a.m. when a commuter Hiace bus, with registration number XG 216 WWK, on top speed, lost control after overtaking another vehicle and collided with an oncoming truck with registration number SMK 923 XN.

He said the bus driver and one passenger sitting in front were trapped, adding that some residents joined men of the FRSC to remove the trapped bodies of the victims.
When contacted, the Abaji unit commander of the FRSC, Assistant Corps Commander Moses A. Audu, confirmed the accident, attributing it to over-speeding and dangerous overtaking.
He said the two corpses were deposited at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada, while the 17 injured passengers were taken to Abaji General Hospital for medical attention.
The FRSC unit commander cautioned motorists against dangerous driving and overloading, especially during this festive period. He further informed that the command had deployed its men and officers to some black spots on the ever-busy Abuja-Lokoja expressway, and warned motorists to desist from plying one-way lanes.
