The Federal Government, through Minister of Interior Abdulrahman
Dambazau in a statement on Tuesday signed by the Permanent Secretary of
the ministry, Bassey Okon Akpanyunghas added Thursday 7th July, 2016 as
Public Holiday for the celebration of Eid-el fitr, having declared
Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th July, 2016 as public holidays earlier.
Eid-al-Fitr is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal. It marks
the end of Ramadan, which is a month of fasting and prayer. Many Muslims
attend communal prayers, listen to a khutba (sermon) and give zakat
al-fitr (charity in the form of food) during Eid al-Fitr.
It should be noted that due to none sighting of the moon, and following
statement from Sultan of Sokoto, the Ramadan fast was extended to
include Tuesday 5th July 2016 and the first day of Islamic month of
Shawwal is now 6th July Wednesday.
