The Cancer Eradication and
Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria, CEAFON held its third summit with the theme
'Funding Cancer Care in Nigeria' from 3-4 October 2017. The keynote speaker, Dr
Olumide Okunola a senior health specialist with World Bank proffered various
solutions to meeting the financial burden of cancer care. One of which was the
establishment of a Catastrophe fund because according to him, even if the 1% of consolidated revenue allocated
to the health sector was actualized, it would only cover primary care and not
more complex conditions like Cancer.
President of CEAFON Prof Francais
Durosimi Etti one of Nigeria's leading oncologists said the annual gathering of
stakeholders has produced important advances in cancer care. Most noteworthy is
the reduction of the cost of Chemotherapy by 50%.
The wife of the Vice
President and Special Guest of Honour, H.E. Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo thanked the
coalition and assured them of her continued support. The Honourable Minister of
Health, Prof Isaac Adewole said many low hanging fruits particularly in the
area of awareness has been gained. He also disclosed that 9 new linear
accelerator radiotherapy machines have been obtained via a financial deal with
the Sovereign Wealth Fund. He lauded the program of NGOs such as the Medicaid
Cancer Foundation and recognized the founder Dr Zainab Bagudu who was also
