The Bauchi State Government in collaboration with ALBASAR
International Foundation Trust, Saudi Arabia, has treated 10, 420
patients suffering from eye challenges.
Dr Zakariya Hassan, Hospital Manager, Bauchi State Specialists Hospital said on Wednesday that the patients were treated within three days.
Hassan disclosed this while conducting Gov. Mohammed Abubakar round some of the wards hosting some of the patients still on admission at the hospital.
He said that the team of medical experts engaged for the assignments had conducted surgeries on 420 patients while 10,000 others had been given various proscriptions and medicines.
He said most of the patients were diagnosed and treated from cataract and glaucoma diseases; the most prevalent diseases in tropical countries.
The manager said that some of the patients were assisted with eye-glasses due poor visibility.
He told the governor that more patients were coming for treatment, adding that some might not obtain same facilities as those that came earlier.
Hassan said that the hospital had exhausted between 400 and 500 patients it made surgical provisions for and the 10,000 patients targeted for treatment during the period.
He said that the team had also exhausted the available eye-glasses and medicines.
The manager described as “very cheap” the “retina surgery” carried out on some of the patients, stating that the hospital was charging N200,000 per patient that included feedings, transport and cost of treatment.
He alleged that some teaching hospitals were charging N650,000 for the same services.
Gov. Mohammed Abubakar, while responding, commended the team for a job well done.
Abubakar urged the team to attend to the remaining patients and promised that the state government would be responsible for the eye- glasses and medicines they would need.(NAN)
