The Media Support Centre (MSC) has accused federal lawmakers of mismanaging their constituency projects, saying the project has been marred by widespread fraud in the last three years amounting to N100billion.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja over the weekend on the outcome of a survey conducted on the constituency projects of the federal lawmakers in 2015 covering 2013 -2015, the Executive Director of the centre, Mr. Wale Fatade called for the immediate scrapping of the fund.
He said the executive should be allowed to handle such projects in line with the anti-graft war of President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to him, the survey has exposed large scale abuse of the projects by the 469 federal lawmakers.
“Our survey has shown that the budgets for the projects are not only shrouded in secrecy but are allegedly diverted by some lawmakers. The polls covered over N100 billion appropriated for the constituency projects for period of 2013 to 2015 only,” he said.
He said that over 78 percent of Nigerians voted for immediate scrapping of the constituency project to reduce corruption.
He said the survey was conducted online and offline, through questionnaires, from July to November 2015 on a sample of 2,534 people residing in 20 states. The maximum sampling error is 2.5%.
Efforts to get the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi yielded no result as his telephone line was unavailable.
However, vice chairman of the committee, Senator Ben Murray- Bruce said: “I’ve no idea on it. I can’t comment on it please because I don’t have facts on it.”
