No fewer than 12,
915 ghost workers from across the 23 local governments areas of Sokoto
state have been uncovered, commissioner for Local Government and
Community Development, Alhaji Mohammed Manir Dan'iya confirmed.
The commissioner
who divulged that the ghost workers were fished put after a verification
exercise of junior staff by the ministry, added that, plans are on the
way to conduct similar verification for senior staff as well.
According to
Dan'iya, a total of about three hundred and nineteen million naira
(319.000.000) was been saved back into the ministry.
"The Ministry
through the Monitoring Development and other stakeholders, has conducted
a local government junior staff verification of about 58, 143
comprising of schedule and unscheduled staff.
"I am proud to
inform you that the verification exercise has yielded a fruitful result
whereby about 12, 915 staff comprising seat at home and ghost workers
were fished out of the local government staff payroll with a saving of
about three hundred and nineteen million naira (319.000.000)"
Recalled that, LEADERSHIP Newspaper had exclusively reported the massive fraud in sokoto local governments sometimes last year.
Speaking during a
Ministerial briefing for all commsioners as approved by governor, Aminu
Waziri Tambuwal at the sokoto press center, the LG commissioner noted
that about 53 women groups and associations have been formed across the
state and were assisted with machines for soap making and groundout
milling.
"This is to enable
the women groups established small cottage industries. A sum of fifteen
million Naira (15.000.000) was spent on that project".
Dan'iya divulged
further that the state intends to build a modern Women Development
Center in each of the 3 Senatorail District to further help reduce
poverty and unemployment among women in the rural areas.
