Disco Wants Senate Committee To Prevail On Jigawa, Kano, Katsina To Pay Debts

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company has urged Senate Committee on Privitisation to prevail on Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States Governments to pay the over N2 billion debt they are owing the company.
The Managing Director of the company, Dr. Jamilu Gwamna, made the call on Monday when the committee, led by its Chairman, Senator Ben Bruce, visited headquarters of the company in Kano.
Gwamna said: “While Jigawa Government is owing us over N1 billion, Katsina State Government and Kano State Government are owing N700 million and N600 million.”

He added that Federal Government agencies in the three states also owed the company N1.3 billion and urged the committee to assist it to recover the debts.
He said: “Over the years, the company had been losing revenue due to illegal activities of old staff of PHCN who connived with current staff to collect monies from customers.”
He, however, said the company had taken stringent measures to check the excesses of fraudsters by blocking all the leakages.
Gwamma said: “We were collecting N670 million before, but last month, we were able to collect N2 billion as revenue; the first time we are collecting such amount.
“Our target was N3.5 billion monthly and KEDCO pay its staff good salary to assist their movement from one place to another.”
The managing director called for the construction of second power line from Kaduna to Kano to enable the company to provide more energy to customers in the three states of its operations.
Responding, Senator Bruce said the committee would soon engage governors to ensure that they paid their outstanding bills to enable the company to remain afloat.
He also said that the committee would write a comprehensive report on the problems presented to the committee with a view to addressing them.
The committee was in Kano State in continuation of its nationwide visit to distribution companies.
