THE Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III,
reiterated that Islam is a religion of peace, which abhors acts of
terrorism.
The revered religious leader also charged all Nigerians to expose any cleric indoctrinating people into any act of terrorism, urging Muslims to educate their children to prevent youths from being recruited into terrorism and insurgency.
The Sultan said this while presiding over the turbaning of the Grand Imam of Ekiti State, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere Bello, as the President General of the League of Imams and Alfas in the Southwest, Edo and Delta States.
Addressing Muslim faithful and adherents of other faiths, who thronged the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, Ado Ekiti, venue of the turbaning, Abubakar urged Sheikh Kewulere to galvanize other Islamic clerics to work together and preach against terror, which is giving Islam a bad name.
Dignitaries at the event include Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose,
represented by his wife, Feyisetan; Ondo State Governor Olusegun
Mimiko, represented by his deputy, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo; Secretary
General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede; Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Revd. Felix Ajakaye, among others.
Expressing delight with unity that exists among Muslims and Christians in Ekiti, the Sultan said the presence of followers of the two faiths to ensure the success of the occasion was a good lesson for everybody to take home.
Condemning terrorism in strong terms, the Sultan said tackling the menace is a task that must be accomplished, urging Muslims not to hesitate to fish out those he described as “bad elements” engaging in acts not supported by the religion.
The Sultan said, “We know what Islam is presently facing, most especially with the issue of terrorism; we know this is not an Islamic agenda and the biggest challenge facing the President General is to bring all Imams, Alfas and Ulamas to brainstorm on how we can stop our children from participating in anti-Islamic activities.
“As teachers in Islamic studies, we want you to teach our children what Islam is and what Islam is not. Imagine a 10-year-old involved in suicide bombing and killing, this has no place in Islam and has no basis in our religion.”
