Boy killed as violence rises in Kaduna school

Gate of Kaduna Capital School.
The Kaduna Capital School Old Students Association has expressed concern over the growing problem of gang violence within and around the school; saying there is urgent need for the state government to provide maximum security for students, teachers as well as the school facilities.
Daily Trust gathered that members of rival gangs move into the school with weapons during and after teaching hours to disrupt activities.

It was also reported four days ago that unknown suspected gang member had on Friday stabbed to death 22-year-old Aliyu Yusuf near the school. It was not known why Yusuf was killed but sources said it could not be unconnected to gang violence.
The president of the association, Hajiya Rabi Musa Saulawa, said though the state government and the school principal have made efforts in safeguarding the school from hoodlums, more needs to be done to stop unauthorized persons from gaining access into the school.
“The state government has tried because now, students identify themselves with identity cards before they are allowed into the school. Also, two security vans have been deployed to secure the school from morning till the end of classes every day,” she said, and called for the need to raise the school fence  higher so that both students and non-students will not be able gain access into it.
“We have had cases of non-students coming into the school by scaling the fence, also, some of these hoodlums get access into the school through the gates and they end up destroying valuable items belonging to the students and teachers. Many of the school windows, doors and even chairs have been destroyed,” she said
According to her, the school was facing the problem of classroom overcrowding, a situation, she said needs urgent attention.
She therefore urged the state government to set up a School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to keep an eye on the school. The committee was part of the policies adopted by the federal government to serve as a link between schools and the communities they serve.  According to her, the committee should include representatives of the Ministry of Education, the school, alumni, village heads of communities hosting the school as well as the police.
