A herdsman, Umaru Easyam, has been arraigned before a Makurdi Magistrate’s Court by the Benue State Police Command for allegedly raping a pregnant housewife(name withheld), in Gwer West Local Government Area of the state.
The accused, who claimed to come from Tse-Ikyer Mbakyoondo village, was arrested by officials of the Civilian Joint Task Force/Livestock Guards when he tried to flee after allegedly committing the act.
The prosecuting officer, Sergeant Godwin Ato, in his First Information Report, FIR, told the court that the husband of the victim, in company of Civilian Joint Task Force members in the area had on November 20 arrestedand taken the accused to Naka Police Station.
The complainant stated that the arrested herder abandoned his cows in the bush and forcefully had sexual intercourse with his wife, who was returning from the farm.
During the hearing, no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction. The prosecutor told the court that investigation was still in progress and asked for another date.Counsel to the accused, Mr. Ahmed Ahmed, informed the court that he was prepared to apply for the bail of his client.
Ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Justice Isaac Ajim, ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Prison, Makurdi, and adjourned the case to February 20, 2018 for further mention.
