The National Information Technology
Development Agency (NITDA) has called on Ministries, Departments and Agencies
(MDAs) to support the Federal Government by using the government domain,
`gov.ng’ for effective service delivery.
Dr Isa Pantami, the
Director-General of the agency, made the call in a statement on Wednesday in
Abuja.
According to Pantami, the
domain is free and compliance to the directive will ease the process of
business transactions within MDAs.
“ We call on MDAs and service
providers to support the Federal Government’s effort of moving Nigeria up on
the scale of ease of doing business by ensuring that all government websites
are hosted on .gov.ng.
“This will promote government
service delivery in Nigeria. Furthermore, .gov.ng domain names are free with no
rental or renewal cost attached,” Pantami said.
Pantami said that over time
MDAs had neglected the use of the domain, in spite of previous notices on the
directive.
He, however, said that the
agency would, henceforth, ensure strict compliance.
“The management of NITDA has
observed the disregard to the use of .gov.ng domain in the transaction of
government business despite previous cautioning by the agency.
“NITDA will henceforth ensure
strict compliance with the directive by ensuring that all government business
transactions are strictly carried out on the Country Code Top Level Domain of
the Nigerian government (ccTLD.ng).
“To this end, the management
of NITDA has put in place measures to ensure that all government MDAs at the
Federal, State, and Local Government levels operate within the domain: .gov.ng.
“We will ensure that all
requests for .gov.ng domain are verified and approved within 24hours provided
all conditions are met.
“The agency will evaluate
government websites in collaboration with relevant agencies of the government
and blacklist all MDA sites running on Generic Top Level Domain (gTLD), other
than the .gov.ng,” the DG said.
Pantami stressed that NITDA
was tasked with the implementation of the Nigerian Information Technology
Policy and coordination of general IT development and regulation in the
country.
He recalled that NITDA was
also mandated to ensure Internet governance and supervision of the management
of the country code top.on behalf of the populace.
He added that MDAs could see http://nitda.gov.ng/procedure-for-gov-ng-domain-registration/level domain
(cctld.ng) and call +2348140504418 for responses to enquiries and technical
support.
