Governor Dankwambo declares support for scrapping of SARS

The governor of Gombe state, Alhaji Hassan Ibrahim Dankwambo, has declared his support for call to scrap the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). According to Governor Dankwabo, it is lamentable that those charged with the responsibility of protecting Nigerians have suddenly become a danger to the people. “I wholeheartedly support Nigerians in the call for #EndSARS.
“Those charged with the protection of Nigerian lives and property have now become the danger to those they are supposed to protect. “However, I believe that we need more reforms in the Nigeria police,” he said in a tweet. NAIJ.com however reports that the inspector general of police Idris Kpotun Ibrahim on Monday, December 4, ordered the immediate re-organization of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) across the country.

The order was as a result of the #EndSARS campaign launched on Twitter by some Nigerians to expose some of the atrocities committed by the SARS. The IGP in a statement read: ''The Nigeria police force has observed the recent trends of event in the social media on the #ENDSARSNOW and the controversy being generated by the innuendos from the allegations and other misconceptions as it concerns the operational roles and activities of the special anti-robbery squad, a detachment of the force.
''Undoubtedly SARS have been doing very well in fighting violent crimes such as armed robbery kidnappings and cattle rustling in the country in the recent time and this has resulted in drastic reduction of incidents of the mentioned violent crimes nationwide," he said. Meanwhile, former vice president Abubakar Atiku has called for investigations into allegations of harassment leveled against SARS.
In a statement issued in series of tweets on his verified Twitter handle on Sunday, December 3, Atiku, a former Nigeria Customs Service top chief, noted that the allegations must be taken seriously by the police and the National Assembly. Is the Nigerian police your friend? -
