MTN Foundation Renovates, Equips and Commissions three Maternal Wards in Sokoto State

 
 There was unending joy and gratitude amongst citizens of Sokoto State as MTN Foundation commissioned the newly renovated and equipped maternity wards in the state. Pregnant women and mothers were particularly excited and grateful for this gesture because of the potential for reduction of high maternal mortality rates recorded nationally.


Three hospitals were renovated and equipped in Sokoto State as part of MTN Foundation Maternal Ward Support Project.  These hospitals; General Hospital, Shagari, General Hospital Gwadabawa and General Hospital Tambuwal, were equipped with ultra-modern executive beds, incubators, and other facilities, and renovated to create a beautiful ambiance for new and expectant mothers.


Commissioning the new wards, the Executive Governor of the State, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, represented by the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Sokoto State, Dr. Balarabe Shehu Kakale Shuni, in his goodwill message thanked MTN Foundation for the wonderful gesture of kindness shown to citizens of the state and for installing world class equipment in the newly renovated maternal wards. “Over the years, MTN Foundation has proven to be a worthy partner and friend to citizens of Sokoto State. We are grateful for this wonderful gift and display of humanitarian excellence.” 

Muhibat Abdulkadir, a midwife in General Hospital, Shagari praised MTN Foundation for this initiative while encouraging pregnant women in the state to utilize the facilities provided and shun the practice of delivery at home or other places that do not guarantee safe delivery for pregnant women.
24 maternal wards in select hospitals, in six states across the country are being refurbished under the MTNF Maternal Ward Support Project.  The other beneficiary states are; Abia, Cross River, Kaduna, Niger and Oyo.

Each of the newly commissioned wards is equipped with:
•    20 hospital beds with cardiac rest
•    20 standard hospital mattresses
•    20 standard hospital bed pillows
•    10 four-way foldable ward screens
•    20 metal bedside cupboards
•    20 visitors’ chairs
•    10 drip stands
•    20 hydraulic over-bed tables
•    10 height adjustable baby cots
•    2 Carl Novel baby incubators

The modernized wards would contribute significantly to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality rate in the state and the nation as a whole.  The initiative is aimed at complementing Government’s national objective of reducing maternal and infant mortality in Nigeria.

The MTN Foundation has invested over N18billion since inception in 2005 and has over 550 project sites across Nigeria.
