Buhari, Sultan, Sanusi Harp on the Virtues of Ahmadu Bello

President Muhammadu Buhari, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar II and the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu  Sanusi II, on Thursday urged Nigerians to emulate the leadership qualities and the incorruptible virtues of the late Premier of the defunct Northern region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto.

The president and the traditional rulers spoke in Kaduna at the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Sardauna who was killed during Nigeria’s first military coup in January 15, 1966.

Buhari who was represented at the occasion by the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, challenged the nation’s leaders at all levels to emulate the ‘incorruptible; virtues of the late Sardauna in order to move the nation to greater heights.

The president noted that the enduring legacies of the late Premier who worked relentlessly for the development of the northern region and Nigeria at large will continue to remain a reference point.

According him, the Sardauna lived and died a poor man and was committed to the development of the North and unity of the country, stressing that Nigerian leaders must learn from his politics and commitment to the development of the North.

In his remark, the Sultan of Sokoto, while extolling the virtues of the late premier, warned northern leaders to stop hiding under the shadows of the late leader and emulate his good deeds.

He said the North was facing many problems, therefore northern leaders must embrace good leadership and governance, maintaining that no development could be achieved without good leadership.
“Fifty years after Ahmadu Bello’s death, let’s work with his blue prints and the ethics he left for us; let us avoid all forms of religious bigotry and rivalry.

“Unemployed youths are like time bomb waiting to explode, whosoever has nothing to do will do anything available, therefore, find a way to engage our jobless youths and get our children off the streets and make them useful to the society,” the Sultan said.

He equally tasked northern governors to see to the resuscitation of the Ajaokuta steel company which could also help to address unemployment.

Also, the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, called on Nigerians fanning the embers of violence and disunity in the country to desist from such acts.

The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said: “People must not add insult to injury...Nigerians have moved over the history of 1966 coup, but today, history is being repeated. Though it is important we keep history, we must not allow history to repeat itself.

While speaking, Ambassador Maitama Sule, who was the guest speaker at the occasion, declared that the Sardauna’s philosophy is the answer to all the problems facing Nigeria.

According to him, the late premier was an honest and detribalised leader who did not discriminate against anybody on the basis of tribe, religion or politics.

“Nigeria of today will today solve all its political, economic, social challenges if the  Sardauna’s philosophy is adopted because that was the answer to all the problems facing the country,” he said.
