Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima,
yesterday embarked on a four day tour of destroyed communities being
rebuilt by the state government after they have been reclaimed by
Nigerian troops. Barely 24 hours after swearing in his new deputy
governor, Usman Mamman Durkwa, Shettima shelved his weekend rest to
personally tour the various reconstruction project being carried out in
Kaga, one of the local government areas of the state that was badly
affected by Boko Haram insurgency.
Governor Shettima had in September declared, while swearing-in his current cabinet members that his administration will focus of massive reconstruction projects of all towns and villages liberated by Nigerian troops.
Shortly after that announcement, the governor approved the reconstruction of towns, villages and hamlets in Kaga local government area to flag off the multimillion naira exercise.
In Kaga, a town 80km west of Maiduguri, various houses, schools, hospitals, police stations, law courts, local government secretariat, worship places among others that were destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents are being rebuilt by the newly established Ministry for Rehabilitation, Reconstructions and Resettlement.
Though the visit to the towns and villages was apparently risky even as armed security personnel were fully on ground to protect the governor and his team of entourage, Shettima took time to ensure that all of the 16 sites under reconstruction in three communities were adequately inspected.
He explained that instead of using roofing zincs and normal ceiling boards for the roofing, more durable aluminium roofing sheets and plaster of paris be used in all the buildings being rebuilt.
Shettima who spent seven precarious hours in the partially desolated communities of Auno and Jakana and Beneshiek, which is the headquarters of Kaga local government, later informed journalists that the state government had chosen to start with Kaga local government area in the first phase in order to set the ball rolling and to convince the federal government and support organizations of the commitment of Borno State government so that the state doesn’t fold its arms while waiting for outside help.
