Indications have emerged that power supply in Katsina State will
recieve significant improvement as two firms have indicated interest to
invest $280 million to generate 175 mw from solar.
Katsina, like most states in the country is grappling with challenges of power supply.
The
multi-billion naira projects like the 10mw wind farm project for which
contract was awarded by the federal government in 2009 appears to be in
limbo.
However, Alhaji Dikko Radda, chief of staff to Governor
Aminu Masari said the state government was in talks with two firms, Pan
African Solar and Nova Solar, to boost power supply.
Radda said
the firms had both offered commitments adding that the two projects are
to be sited in Kankia and expected to be commissioned in 2016.
According to Radda, Pan African Solar is to invest $130m for 75mw, while Nova Solar is to commit $150m for 100mw.
He
said the entire project will be one of the largest solar projects in
the continent adding that Governor Masari had been making necessary
plans for the realisation of the projects to boost power supply in the
state and add to the national grid.
Radda said upon successful completion, the project will provide cheap power and youth employment
