A
least, 20 people were killed while several others got injured when
members of Boko Haram terrorists invaded Malari and other surroundings
of Konduga local government area of Borno state.
Malaria village
is south east and about 35 kilometers drive from Maiduguri, the state
capital and had suffered series of deadly attacks in recent past until
recently when the Nigerian military liberated the area from the grip of
the insurgents.
The attack today, according to residents of the
area came as a surprise, as the insurgents came with firepower more
superior to that of the few military men left behind to secure the area.
Mustapha
Abubakar who fled to Maiduguri said the insurgents who came on
motorcycles and in some hilux vehicles started shooting sporadically,
killing everybody on sight.
He
said, “we had to run into the bush to hide. We later returned to the
house after they left to pick some of our belongings. I counted 20
corpses; some were slaughtered while others sustained gunshot wounds.
The number of those killed are worrisome as the corpses were littered
across the streets of the village.
“Government has to do something
fast, if not they will continue to wreck havoc on innocent citizens, as
every surrounding village not far from Maiduguri has been taken over by
the insurgents, as most of them are residing around the area,” Abubakar
stated.
Confirming the attack, the Police Commissioner, Mr.
Opadokun Aderemi said, ” Today 27/9/15 at about 2am, suspected Boko
Haram terrorists attacked Malari village, Konduga Council Area.
“Nine
persons were reported killed, while 10 were injured. The village is not
far from Alau Dam that supplies water to Maiduguri and its environs.
“Injured
victims are now being treated at the University of Maiduguri Teaching
Hospital. Security has already been beefed up,” the Police Commissioner
said.
