Two
young men within the ages of 17 and 20 got drowned in River Kaduna,
allegedly trying to escape police arrest over unidentified criminal offense.
No fewer than 15 Police men were said to have swooped on picnickers last Friday by the bank of River Kaduna in Kinkino axis of the river in the metropolis, threatening to shoot any of the picnickers that tried to run away.
But in a swift reaction when contacted, Spokesman, of Kaduna State Police Command, DSP, Abubakar Zubairu denied knowledge of the incident.
He said, “The information is not true , it is mischievous, frivolous and misleading, they are just trying to tarnish or dent good image of police. Police did not chase anybody, neither did they see anybody that ran to somewhere because of their presence.
“Police were on routine crime prevention patrol and nobody came to complain police action or inaction, and if anybody with genuine complaint, he should come up, so that we can investigate”.
However, two eyewitnesses who are survivors of the incident said they were so frightened by the police threat that they decided to jump into the river in order to swim to the other side of it to evade arrest, even when they claimed that they did not commit any crime.
But two of the escaping persons were said to have drowned in the river, while the other two were able to swim across the river.
The names of the deceased were given as Aliyu Garba, 20, and Ahmed Nasir,17, while the survivors were Aminu Bashir and Hassan Adamu.
