Why we postponed local government poll – Gov. Ahmed

The Kwara State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, has attributed the extension of the initial three months tenure of local government transition implementation caretaker committees by another three to the current economic realities in the country.
Speaking at the monthly meeting of the All Progressives Congress in Ilorin, Ahmed said the local government councils in the state are just getting stabilised in meeting basic requirement of their workers.
He said: “To attempt any election at that level of governance now will mean an additional pressure on their meagre resources.”
The governor promised to use the expected 25 per cent of the Paris-London loan refund to assist the local government councils to offset part of their outstanding salary arrears and on critical infrastructure development in the state.
The Governor explained to the party members that the government is committed to meeting the infrastructure deficit in the state in order to make the state more attractive for investment.
Speaking on recent clash between farmers and cattle rearers in Baruten Local Government area of the state, Ahmed said the State Security Council had resolved that perpetrators would be treated as criminals, while anyone found culpable of destroying other people’s property or farms would be made to pay compensation.
The governor appealed to residents of the state not to take laws into their hands and remain law-abiding in order to sustain existing harmonious relationship.
Governor Ahmed also spoke of plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the state in low-key, adding that the occasion would be used to honour eminent personalities who had made indelible contributions to the state.
Earlier, giving stewardship of his ministry, the State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Alhaji Aro Yahya, disclosed that N1.2 billion was recently disbursed to 36 contractors through the state’s Infrastructure Development Fund.
Alhaji Yahya said a number of road projects had been completed across the three senatorial districts, while the recently completed Oko Bridge in Ifelodun Local Government Area would be commissioned soon by the Governor.
In his remarks, the State Chairman of the APC, Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani, commended members of the party for their loyalty and support to Governor Ahmed and the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.
