The director general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) , Muhammadu Sani Sidi, has said that the recent flood disaster has destroyed 37,610 hectares of farmlands including 5,950 houses in Kebbi in 10 out of the 21 local government areas of the state.
The NEMA chief also stated that 25,950 persons mostly farmers were affected as well as two farming communities in Makera namely Wabakko Hausa and Wabakko Fulani were dislodged by the flood disaster.
Sidi who was on courtesy call to Governor Bagudu yesterday at Government House Birnin Kebbi, handed over relief materials which comprises undisclosed number of food and non food materials from the federal government to the state government.
He said that “ These negative hydro -meteorological conditions were not peculiar to Kebbi State , because flood has also affected several states across the country but it saddened my heart to note that about 70% of farmlands in the affor mentioned LGAs were affected. I am here not only to hand over the relief materials but also to sympahasised with the governor and people of Kebbi State in general “.
He also said that although natural phenomenon cannot be prevented, people however should not fold their hands waiting for disasters to disrupt their livelihood and environment. He enjoined all and sundry to join hands as individuals and groups in disaster management and also adopt a proactive disaster management measures.
Governor Bagudu thanked the Federal government for the relief assistance to the state and also commended NEMA for its humanitarian assistance especially to the IDPs in the North East.
