Refrain From Partisanship, Governor Abubakar Charges Political Journalists

Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar has reechoed the need for Nigerians journalists covering politicians to remain ethical by maintaining their neutrality and refraining from being partisan in carrying out their journalistic assignments.
The governor who stated this when the newly elected state leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists paid him a courtesy visit, said the media, as an important institution has obligation to report all governments, like other institutions and individuals correctly and fairly.
Governor Mohammed Abubakar said politics must be played with highest degree of responsibility and modesty, pointing out that a new deal needs to be struck between the government and the Nigeria Union of Journalists because “the media is central to the entrenchment of democracy and survival of democratic rule”.

He observed that no serious altercation took place between his administration and the media, lamenting that some reportages in broadcast media have grossly gone against the National Broadcasting Commission’s broadcast code, adding that his administration only overlooks such abuses in the broadcast media content.
The governor expressed happiness that the electorate have gradually started understanding the truth about the wrong presentation of the government in news content, while assuring of the completion of digitization of state-owned radio and television stations.
Earlier, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Ibrahim Mohammed Malam Goje who assured the governor of fair coverage and adherence to ethics in reporting the State, appealed to the government to improve the welfare of State-owned media workers, training of members and digitization of the State media outlets.
